Over at Metafilter, when a moderator needs to participate in that mode (as opposed to just a MeFite), they leave a little comment in small script, like:

A few comments removed. Let's not derail the conversation; take it to MetaTalk if you want to discuss this further.

And when they have discussions about, say, tagging, they do it like this and nobody asks anyone to leave.

I'm not suggesting tildes should be like reddit or metafilter, but I would suggest that people in general feel ownership over their writing. It's why when editors did things by hand they started using any ink color except red - because red marks were like teachers' marks, and teachers' marks meant you did it wrong and that makes the writer feel bad and resentful and resistant to the feedback.

Using my post as an example, not because it's interesting but because at least I'm not pointing at someone else... here. The mod (as we're calling them over on the other thread now) changed the title capitalization and changed all my tags. My tag was "fender guitar" and their tag was "guitars.fender"; I didn't add a paywall tag because I provided a link around it, they decided it belonged; etc. The mod did this before they read the article, because it was almost instant. I was surprised, bemused, wondered what "national day" was, and decided it didn't really matter. But the mod could've left a note, like:

OP, added a few tags for the source, author, paywall, and other things, plus we keep the post titles in sentence case so I fixed that too!

The result would've been that I didn't feel I did wrong but that I had a helper, and the note would've informed me but also (more importantly) everyone else who stumbled on the post, so we could see that these changes are just the way things are done here, a part of the culture, and there wouldn't be a subsequent trainwreck when the edited person has to ask the Mod why.

@cfabbro this might be as good as I'm going to be able to give, for a further explanation of my thought.

Let me think about this and maybe get back with you, possibly in a direct message. I don't want another back-and-forth like what happened there, except this time focused/piled on me, in which Newbie asks questions and Old Guard shouts it down. And I really don't want to focus on the 2 people who asked someone to leave the community but a detailed discussion necessarily does just that. And honestly, if most people think everything was fine, then it's me that's not fitting and a detailed navel-gaze doesn't accomplish anything in that case.

What I meant was, when you are referring to "mods" in your sentence, which specific people do you mean? Who are "the mods"?

I always assumed the person who left the comment deleted their own comment after the pile-on. But I see that as also disappointing, imagining how that felt for them.

Anyway, I'm not interested in trying to change anything, I'm too new to feel that invested. Just speaking in support of the others who got shut down or who felt like some of this could be done better, because that mirrors my thoughts... but tildes isn't my place to change.

In a way, the conversation was, "An unknown and unwritten rule is that if you write "20" I will change it to "twenty" without giving any reason, and if you ask why I will say "because", and if you don't like that then I invite you to leave."

There's the action; the way the action was performed; and the discussion about those two things. Even if the action was ok, the second is jarring, and the third was disappointing.

I had my only post's title changed, too, plus tags changed and added - silently and almost immediately. It was fine, but it felt weird and I kinda didn't like it.

And now having read the responses in this part of the thread, plus seen that some comments are deleted, there's been a reference to mods, and one person is now deciding the matter finished and won't respond further... I'm just... surprised, I guess is the right word. It's a more heavy-handed and rigid system than I'm used to.

Anyway, just wanted to give you some support with a "me too".

The book was great, looking forward to seeing the movie. Anyone liking that snippet of the soundtrack might want to also give a listen to The Halluci Nation (formerly A Tribe Called Red). I think this is their song, actually: The Halluci Nation ft. Black Bear - Stadium Pow Wow. Another great one from them: The Halluci Nation - R.E.D. ft. Yasiin Bey, Narcy, and Black Bear

edit: Really want to highlight Black Bear Singers here, too, a lot of the vocals and drums are coming from them in particular.

I'm ok with it not being on my phone, just letting you what happens just for curiosity's sake.

On Chrome on my phone, Sync is turned on. I did try logging out of tildes and back in, refreshing the screen of course, and also I turned on the Saving Web And App Activity setting on my phone's Chrome settings. Not sure how to force a sync, but I'll look at it again in a few hours to see if it changes and update this comment either way just to let you know.

Again, I think this extension is great and I don't need it on my phone - really appreciate your work on it, and making it available on Chrome again. I turned off all my vote displays and that works excellently (desktop only but that's ok). Very grateful to have that feature as well.

promised update: about 9 hours later so whatever sync was needed should've happened by now... on Chrome/Android, votes still show and user tags do not display. Doesn't matter to me, but since you don't have an Android to test on I thought you'd like to know.

You might look to the explainer (linked above) for some of the answers. The explainer also refers to their accompanying published article:

    Webb, A. R., & Engelsen, O. (2006). Calculated Ultraviolet Exposure Levels for a Healthy Vitamin D Status. Photochemistry and Photobiology, 82(6), 1697. doi:10.1562/2006-09-01-ra-670

(The link in PubMed is broken because they have the incorrect year in their DOI, but this link will show you the paper.)

Just skimming, I believe the question about clothing is expose 25% of your skin:

Following the formula provided by Holick (50,51), which recommends exposure to ¼ of personal minimal erythemal dose (MED) on ¼ skin area (hands, face and arms; i.e. corresponding to the UV equivalent of an oral dose of 1000 IU vitamin D), [from the paper, p. 1698]

And that's across your whole body, so:

In order to assess the fraction of the body that is exposed to the sun, the Lund and Browder Chart for skin burns provides an indication: Face 3.5%, neck 2%, trunk 26%, hands 6%, arms 14%, legs 14%, thighs 18%. [from the explainer on their website]

For burning, I don't see that part on the calculator but I assume you mean their skin type selections? Might be a language translation issue but I thought those categories were weird, but the explainer points to Fitzpatrick skin types and the paper has a detailed chart on p. 1699 with a footnote that seems important to your query.

As someone who sometimes leads group discussions in events like that, I think the best possible outcome was that you left. There are some good reasons (you're seeing some posted here) for the structured dialogue, but if that's not what you wanted leaving was a good choice. Challenging the leader and group to retool the hour to your wish isn't the classiest move, but there are sometimes people who do things like that and everyone is more comfortable when that person either goes along with the group/activity, or leaves to find something they like better.

A different option you could've taken was to join in the planned discussion, listening carefully to names and what people wanted to share, and then when it came to your turn to say your bit and then say, "I'm really grateful to have had this chance to be introduced to everyone here. I hope after the session today, say around 6 PM, you can all join me for beers or coffee at the pub/cafe around the corner - first round on me!"

It's disappointing to see how many people are skeptical of science (especially anti- public health initiatives, like vaccines, pasteurization, fluoridation, seatbelts), and how many people want to make a buck off that crowd, consequences be damned.

Wistock [goat milk seller] is unsure about some of the health claims made by ardent raw milk fans. But she sees the issue as a matter of freedom. “I don’t like restrictive laws about what foods you can and can’t sell to your neighbors,” she said.

What legal recourse will her pregnant neighbor have when they drink that milk and it contains listeria?

You're welcome, and I'm glad you asked. As you saw from the responses, most people on the Internet have been hurt by the casual hatred that's been allowed to fester on social media, even if that hatred was mostly concealed from them in real life. I was sure you knew that... the writer just didn't do a clean job when adding a few sentences.

I bet the author originally wrote this, keeping the 'mass-harass' and 'as a white guy' together so it's clear he's saying that people get harassed, but he's not personally experienced the worst of it:

Retweets and quote tweets made it easy for good content to travel, but also made it easy to mass-harass anyone on Twitter. (As a white guy in America, I also experience the bad far less than many users, and I suspect I’d feel differently about the end of this era if I weren’t quite so privileged here.)

And then he stuffed this in the middle, which muddies the original meaning and makes it seem like the 'as a white guy' is about tracking for advertisers:

Meta’s knowledge of its users makes your Explore page more interesting, and only extends the dossier on you available to advertisers. I’m not sure it’s possible to have the good without the bad, and I think the bad might outweigh the good.

The writer needed to take another pass at the paragraph.
