This is such a complex issue and I hope that people make a real effort to view both sides of it. I know someone who works as an officer in the prison system and it's important to balance the right of the staff to safety with the rights of the inmates as well. I think there is a lot of fear that the protests could turn into riots, which isn't safe for anyone at all.
Aside from individual acts, I don't put much blame for the state of the system on the correctional officers. They're victims in some ways too, forced to work while greatly outnumbered or with...
Aside from individual acts, I don't put much blame for the state of the system on the correctional officers. They're victims in some ways too, forced to work while greatly outnumbered or with people who are dehumanized and desperate. Much more blame lies with voters who lapped up "tough on crime" racist legislation and rhetoric.
Yeah I agree completly. This officer I know is stuck with well over 100 inmates by himself, in a dorm like area with nothing to separate him from them. It's scary stuff.

You know the executives at the company he works for are making bank though! They could give a shit if he gets stabbed, except for the paperwork they might have to do. Same with the inmates, the executives don't give a rat's ass how they're being treated as long as the money rolls in. Will the inmates and guards ever realize they're on the same side, though? I've heard in some prisons the guards play groups of inmates against each other so that they aren't focused on the guards. Same thing with the executives who make more money with every corner cut.
Grim and unsurprising. The modern world's greatest slaver nation, ladies and gentlefolk.
