Crazy. I'm surprised they caved, and pretty grateful for the few senators who made tough decisions.
My best guess:
They will find plenty of instances of him flat-out lying, but no direct evidence of assault (because it’s damn near impossible to prove at this point). Senators will overlook the blatant lying and confirm him along party lines.
I don't get why they're so concerned with getting Kavanaugh in particular through. There's got to be any number of corporate stooges waiting in the wings who don't have this kind of a history. I mean even if they started over now, they've still got more than 4 months before the next congress is sworn in. Is it just procedurally difficult for a president to quickly withdraw their nomination?
I know this one!
collusionconspiracy mess.Republicans knew that Kavanaugh was dirty. Even resident Swamp-Thing, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did not want Kavanaugh. By going with him anyway, and getting a light shone on all of this and Kavanaghs past behavior, the Majority Party may have wasted some very crucial time they need to get away with their crimes.
On top of that, Trump is literally incapable of admitting fault. Because he's an actual narcissist.
I knew about 1, but not 2 and 3. That October case is like, extremely worrisome. I would hope that such a thing wouldn't come down to ideological tribalism on the court viz a viz the other justices, but as the sheer quantity of 5-4 decisions over the past decade or two has shown us, the days of the SCOTUS being a neutral and dispassionate arbitrator are long gone.
Having read your reply, it's basically "this does look weird, but it could be nothing. Since there's no photographic evidence of him gambling we should just assume it's nothing."
At some level it's a judgement call - do you think someone who potentially has gambling issues and shady debt should get a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court with its honor code of ethics?
I really hope the FBI looks into this. I know they only have a week and the abuse charges are what's in the public eye, but this carries significant weight as well regarding his fitness to serve as a Justice.
