I don't think they're that dangerous, but they're deadly if you're not paying attention. I've had my fair share of walking along/on train tracks—used to have a job where walking across and down train tracks saved you ~1 mi of walking around them, but it's easy to realize "oh, that thing off in the distance is a train, I should stay way away from it. They don't come at you that fast if you're paying attention.
