    I am always stunned at how every article I see about india results in hundreds of people dying. Are the safety restrictions in india weaker than other countries? How did a fireworks event get scheduled next to a train track with not enough space for everyone to stand safely?

    This is certainly a tragedy, but, it almost feels like this represents a lack of common sense, or an event was planned in an entirely invalid place. I would be exceptionally careful to be near any train tracks where I wasn't fully aware of the state of things.

    I don't think they're that dangerous, but they're deadly if you're not paying attention. I've had my fair share of walking along/on train tracks—used to have a job where walking across and down train tracks saved you ~1 mi of walking around them, but it's easy to realize "oh, that thing off in the distance is a train, I should stay way away from it. They don't come at you that fast if you're paying attention.
