The UN special rapporteur on poverty was invited by the UK government to visit. His report is damning: the new benefit ("universal credit") is causing harm, and that harm disproportionately affects children, women, and disabled people.

The current system is a mess. The new benefit, Universal Credit, is supposed to make things better but it's awful.

If you want to get a sense of how complex it is have a look at the decision makers guide: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/decision-makers-guide-staff-guide

A decision maker is a person who looks at the details of a person's claim and applies the law to decide if they can claim benefit or not. The law is complex, so the DM Guide gathers all the acts, statutes, statutory instruments, and case law into a handy guide.

You can see how many laws are involved here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/decision-makers-guide-abbreviations-staff-guide

So, if you look at this link: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/decision-makers-guide-staff-guide and you start looking at the volumes you can see the page counts. There's over 10,000 pages.
