We have a problem with White Supremacy and Neo-Nazi ideology in America. I don't know how I feel about posting the link to his open letter, but it's bad. Available upon PM.

unsurprisingly, there appears to be a christchurch connection to this, as if the parallels and timing weren't obvious enough to give that away on their own.

I'm noticing a lot of conservatives pouncing all over this shooting with their "good guy with a gun" takes. Now they don't care about immediately turning it political.

And notice how quickly Trump responded to this one. Didn't hesitate at all with his response, unlike every other shooting by a white guy.

One person is still dead, three others injured, and who knows how many will suffer permanent psychological damage.

This is not acceptable. We need to stop these tragedies before they happen. Not clean up the mess and call it a day.

reporting on this from the guardian also notes that detail. assuming they confirm these, i'd be pretty shocked if there wasn't some sort of alt-right, neo-nazi, or otherwise fascist connection...

Dore said that police have copies the suspect’s social media posts and an alleged hate-filled open letter he wrote right before the shooting that “we will be reviewing those to determine legitimacy of it and determine how exactly it plays into the investigation."

reporting on this from the guardian also notes that detail.

In a press briefing, San Diego County sheriff William Gore described the shooter as a white adult male from the city of San Diego, and said he used an “AR style” semi-automatic rifle. Gore said he was fleeing in a vehicle after the attack, and was apprehended without incident. Authorities confirmed they were aware of an apparent manifesto written by the attacker, but did not delve into its substance and said they were working to confirm its legitimacy.

assuming they confirm these, i'd be pretty shocked if there wasn't some sort of alt-right, neo-nazi, or otherwise fascist connection involved. the possible pathologies of people who shoot up synagogues and also apparently have 'hate filled' manifestos/social media tend to be pretty limited.

I don't know when people will realize that true threats are not constitutionally protected speech. If someone posts something that demonstrates an intent to cause immediate violence, that person needs to be dealt with before people get hurt, such as with this.

It doesn't matter if they hide behind a thin veil of anonymity, and the platform's stance on privacy certainly doesn't matter. If a person uses a platform to post a true threat and the platform doesn't alert the authorities or take proper steps to deal with it, that platform needs to be held accountable as well as the person that posted it. I just don't get why platforms like 8chan haven't been prosecuted yet, and why they're still allowed to stay online after demonstrating their unwillingness to deal with threats like these.

mostly because: (1) websites generally are not held accountable for what their users post since that is a gigantic quagmire nobody wants to push that would fuck a lot of websites; and (2) 8chan is hosted out of the philippines, unless something has changed in the time since i left, which means there's jurisdictional issues that kinda limit how it can be dealt with anyways even if they could be held accountable.

I'm kind of doxing myself by saying this, but I used to go to preschool there. Fuck. I don't know why, as my family isn't Jewish. I remember my mom pulling me early from there on 9/11.
