Wild guess: His buddy Erdogan told him that the Kurds in Syria are communists, and that's part of the reason he decided to abandon them.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was, as the name hints at, founded as a communist organisation. These days they apparently fight for an ideology called democratic confederalism (which still sounds a bit communist-y to me, with the whole no-private-property thing). Erdogan of course considers the PKK and the People's Protection Units (YPG) to be the same organisation, and apparently it wasn't hard to convince Trump into believing the same. And thus by supporting the YPG, the Democrats sympathise with communists in Syria, at least in Trump's confused mind.
