This is something I'm not seeing much of in the news ... Trump's underlying motivation and goals with the Ukraine thing (and in weeks to come, I predict, the exact same thing with China will emerge).

Trump has these two ... I'll go ahead and call them conspiracy theories, but whatever validity they may have is, I think, mostly irrelevant ... about the Bidens, and a DNC server proving Ukraine meddling in the US 2016 elections.

Trump has been pushing these theories on his own for some time, but getting no traction. Anyone who doesn't watch Fox religiously doesn't take them seriously.

So Trump arranges — as secretly as possible — to blackmail the President of Ukraine into publicly announcing, seemingly of his own volition, his own investigations into these things, in order to normalize them ... so that Trump could then tweet about how "see, I told you ... even Ukraine thinks this is important. We should be investigating these things, too'.

The effect of "getting dirt" on his political rivals is, I think, a bonus but actually just a side-effect. Trump's goal here has been to manipulate the media narratives at a very high level, in the direction he thinks they should go, and to strongarm foreign (and domestic) leaders into helping him do it.

And it behooves us to focus on how he is trying to do this all the time, and how devastatingly effective he's been at it.

Except, it doesn't seem to be effective? It's what got the whole impeachment process started.
