I'm quite confused, maybe it's the perspective from the camera.
An even happier ending - the man was illegally in France but the president offered him citizenship as a result of his actions.
That makes my hands sweat just thinking about it.

From the Guardian article, the man up on the balcony was just holding the child but was unable to lift the child himself.
Looked like he couldn’t get a hold on him due to the barrier between the two sides of the balcony.
