As a linguist I deeply hate the use of "alphabet" here, but I suppose most laypeople wouldn't know even basic phonetics/phonology terminology so they had to use something.
I'm super fascinated to see where this leads! further developments in this space though! Having complex phonetic variation doesn't necessarily mean that all that variation holds meaning for their communication, but identifying the types of variation and the contexts we see them in is absolutely necessary for any attempt to figure out which bits are meaningful and how complex the underlying structure actually is.
