    From the article:

The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) has enrolled tens of thousands of participants in clinical trials of hormones and other medications and tracked the health of many thousands more over more than 3 decades. Its findings have had a major influence on health care. WHI leaders announced yesterday that contracts supporting its regional centers are being terminated in September and that the study’s clinical coordinating center, based at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, “will continue operations until January 2026, after which time its funding remains uncertain.” They added that the contract terminations for its four main sites “will significantly impact ongoing research and data collection … severely limit[ing] WHI’s ability to generate new insights into the health of older women, one of the fastest-growing segments of our population.” (There are about 55 million postmenopausal women in the United States.)

Thanks for posting this, /u/skybrian, though I'm full up with impotent rage at the moment. Not even the slightest attempt to privatize this incredibly cheap, massively beneficial research, just throwing it down the shitter with the rest of the formerly functional parts of the U.S. Government. You'd think health insurance companies would be all over themselves to maintain this trivial funding because the savings from it could be astronomical. I'm not saying we could trust the results of privately funded research with no independent verification, though...

Acts like this give the lie to any right-wing ideological consistency; the market hasn't even been given a chance to replace the public functions that are being destroyed. This is all about sparing the richest from any tax obligation other than military and police to defend their personal interests, or whatever they desire that they're willing to pay tribute or dribble out charity for.

I’m wondering if there is still a chance to privatize it now that the news is out?
