Another reason not to buy into the fixed theory is that it can cause people to give up too easily. If something becomes difficult, it’s easy to assume that it simply must not have been your passion, after all.

Dweck told me that “find your passion” has a laudable history. “Before that, people were saying, ‘Find your genius,’ and that was so intimidating. It implied that only people who were really brilliant at something could succeed,” she said. “‘Find your passion’ felt more democratic. Everybody can have an interest.” But this study suggests that even the idea of finding your “true” interest can intimidate people and keep them from digging further into a field.

Have to admit, Find your genius sounds pretty intimidating.

I remember my high school guidance counselor selling me that line. "What's your passion? What do you want to do with your life? That's what you should do for a living." they asked. I just looked at them and said, "Who's going to pay me to sit alone in my apartment, reading and listening to heavy metal albums? 'Cause that's all I want out of life right now. I just want to be left the hell alone."

They didn't have an answer that was worth a damn, so I learned how to code. It's not my passion. I don't love it. However, I happened to have been good enough at it to make a living doing it for the last 20 years.

Neat article. It's nice to see more people with the idea that passion can be literally anything you put your efforts towards. I've always hated the idea that you have this awe inspiring feeling if...
