I thought this was an interesting article that discusses the need to "anti-flock" sometimes in order to make progress. Following the crowd works well when there's a solid path for moving forwards, but sometimes nobody knows the path, and the only way to find it is to have a bunch of people spread out and try crazy things. Most of the ideas will be complete failures, but if one succeeds, the "flock" can re-form around it and start making progress again as a group.
