I am usually pretty great at holding discussions with people and everytime I would hint at it or bring it up he would get super defensive and aggressive. I assume he has been made fun of and attacked about it many times (and rightfully so). So I never really go to hear the 'why' of his belief, but it was most definitely a real belief.

Same guy is one of those people that think yelling at someone that doesn't speak the same language as you helps, so I don't really think very much of him. No Dan, repeating what you are saying over and over in a increasingly louder voice and yelling at a customer that only speaks Spanish is not helping him understand you. It's just letting him know you are being an assholes because he does understand your inflection.

I'm pretty sure it started out as just a contrarian position based on humor and satire, and then actual crazy people latched on and made it theirs. People want a simpler world they can understand....

People want a simpler world they can understand. People crave certainty. For some people, the immensity and complexity of the world is overwhelming; the idea of thousands of things, many of them bad, happening everyday totally beyond the control of anybody unnerves them deeply.

It's far easier to point fingers at people both imagined and real, and accuse them of manipulating the facts. They will go through some amazing mental gymnastics just to make the world a little smaller.
