While there hasn't been any protests in my city, it's not uncommon to see a truck driving down the road flying Canadian flags or "Fuck Trudeau" flags. It's definitely a vocal minority, but it makes me really uncomfortable that these people are part of my community.
I'm glad the government is finally doing something, but it's infuriating how much the local and provincial police have let them get away with thus far.
What worries me though, is that even if this movement dies down, these people still exist. Their ideas, while ignorant, are growing and appealing to people at a rate I am not comfortable with.
My thought is that people's quality of life has been on the decline for a while now. Housing prices, the cost of everything has gone up while wages and good jobs have gone down. I think this decline has been going on for a while, but the pandemic just added fuel to the fire.
These are complex problems with complex solutions, and I think a lot of us feel powerless to do anything about it. So while I don't agree with these protests, I can see why it's sucked a lot of people in. I think maybe it gives them a sense of power, like they are taking some control back, even if in reality they aren't doing anything positive or constructive. Like, it's a lot easier to fly a "Fuck Trudeau" flag on your truck while going to get groceries than actually trying to make your community a better place.
I dunno, I guess I'm just trying to say I'm glad some of these people are going to face consequences, and hopefully this movement dies down. But this movement is only a symptom of a much bigger problem that I think we need to address.
