Below is a quote from a toot I made on the topic that sums up the results of this election. AmA about this as I'm from Turkey.
CHP gained major provinces in Turkey (including Ankara & Istanbul), the Turkish Communist Party got the Tunceli province. In Istanbul and Izmir CHP won against past ministers of the current ruling party, and especially in Ankara the AKP candidate was the current Minister of Environment and Urban Planning. Almost all of major cities are CHP now. Despite all mainstream media, despite the govt., despite post-truth.
Good news in a long while.
To add to this, tho, there is an eery rise of the MHP, the Nationalist party, which should not be occluded with the positivity of results.
In theory yes, if any of the mayors are found guilty of terror etc. that is possible. But I don't think he'd risk that b/c that would cause a lot of trouble and animosity. They did that with some...
In theory yes, if any of the mayors are found guilty of terror etc. that is possible. But I don't think he'd risk that b/c that would cause a lot of trouble and animosity. They did that with some HDP mayors before, but the party has relations to PKK so it did not cause huge problems across the nation. CHP and IP do not have that sort of links, and it will be impossible to justify such move. That would mean even more votes lost, and possibly public upheaval given it is the votes of a 35 percent of the electorate (minus the votes of IP and HDP which in total are near 10%).
AKP and MHP together barely pass the 50% mark, and in such event they'd probably fail to pass it (which I think they'll probably fail anyways).
I think they will try to be more moderate and focus on economy because it is causing their voters to switch slowly. With new mayors in power, we'll probably get to see all the corruption that took place especially in Istanbul and Ankara. Unless a radical change in economic policy, we'll watch TRY devaluate.
Erdoğan has caused lots of animosity among major members of his party too, and there is a chance that they will try their hands at forming a new movement, which AKP fears so much their newspapers have been engaging in heavy counter propaganda just because there are rumours of it.
IDK what to expect TBH, I see a possibility of ex-AKP, CHP & IP coalition as the best way out. HDP will probably be left out because the other parties wouldn't risk the PR hit, but maybe they will support such coalition unoficially (which they did, minus the potential ex-AKP party, in this elections).
How the new, charismatic mayors will proceed will determine a lot of our future.

Anyone know whether Erdogan can undo any of that at this point? I've seen too much politics news in recent years to allow myself to feel optimistic.
