If we're honest with ourselves, this is not news. But in myriad ways, we're encouraged to be dishonest, to pretend blindness, to avert our eyes towards comforting distractions.

There've been complaints about polemic, ideological, hectoring content on Tildes. I say we need a little edge to let the important stuff be heard over the noise, and this is just one example.

Many of us are struggling with depression, relative poverty, and other personal issues. I'm posting this not as cause for despair, but as an opportunity to look outside ourselves and see the ways in which we can take positive action to help others worse off.

There are way too many organizations and legal actions to list here, but these are a couple of significant ones that have been effective:

    Freedom for Immigrants

Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law

    More here.

If you reside in major U.S. states (Texas, California, Florida) for Central and South American refugee entry, there are hundreds of organized local actions you can participate in.

Final note, with a hat tip to George Orwell - there's been an elision of the word "refugee" in U.S. news, replaced by "migrant". It's a deliberate confusion of terms for people coming to "steal our jobs", versus people fleeing for their lives. None of them should be denied basic needs, dignity, and compassion.
