This reminded me of the Nebra Sky Disc - an object with a fascinating story by itself with how it was discovered, stolen, recovered and tons of speculation on what it was for. One theory at least is that it shows the Pleiades in a position relative to a crescent moon indicating it is time to add a leap month to the calendar. There is a documentary on it as well.
