    2024 is a solar maximum [archive link], and visible activity tends to peak around the spring and autumn equinoxes.

    This particular event isn't likely to cause significant damage Earth-side, though there may be radio and power fluctuations at higher latitudes. Aurora-watchers should have a lightshow as far south as Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Iowa, possibly even Colorado and Utah, in the U.S. and throughout northern Europe. Aurora australis is also reported visible in the Southern Hemisphere. Short-term global visibility is here.

    However, there's some reason for concern about impacts on satellites. There's a good New Yorker piece on solar storm threats that's worth reading.
