    This YouTube video breaks down a bizarre sequence of events in the Red Sox’s 2-1 loss to the Cubs on August 10th. For fans of baseball’s obscure rules, this is a treat.

    For those of you who don’t want to watch a video, ESPN has an article. A teasing excerpt from there:

    When the ball was caught and the Blue Jays eventually tossed it to first to double up Sogard, that was the third out, and it appeared Toronto still led 2-0 as players headed to the dugout.

    That's when the umpires started discussing the play and then spoke with both managers.

    "What we have here is we have a time play," crew chief Chris Guccione announced on the field, "meaning when the third out was made at first base with the runner not tagging up, the runner that was on third base also did not tag but crossed home plate before the third out was made at first base. So we're going to New York to do a rules check."

      Phew. I watched the video, read the article, read the wikipedia page on appeal plays, watched the video again, and I think I finally get what happened.

      I'm kind of surprised that I've gone this long without ever understanding appeal plays before. I'm not a baseball fan or anything, but I'll watch games on occasion and have been to a few here and there, but never realized these were different from other outs.
