They weren't eliminated, they just dropped from 2nd to 3rd place in their group, and they still qualify for the knockouts by way of being one of the top four 3rd place teams across the six groups. So this means they face a team that won their group instead of another team that finished 2nd in their group (24 total teams, 6 groups, and 16 qualify for the knockouts: 6x 1st place, 6x 2nd place, and 4x 3rd place).

Theoretically, a group winner is a tougher opponent, but Austria surprised everyone and topped their group with France and the Netherlands in it. Obviously, Austria is still a good team in good form, but they're historically a bad team with minimal success in Euros/WC and most teams would prefer not to face France or the Netherlands. So, not the worst outcome for a 3rd place team decided on the fair play tiebreaker.

The real heart-breaker is for Ukraine. Their entire group finished level on 4 points, but they're eliminated in 4th place based on the goal differential tiebreaker when there are teams qualifying in 3rd place that finished with fewer than 4 points in their own group (like Slovenia).

Oh, thanks for the clarification! I'm glad they still have a chance.

This seems to make it an ever sharper knife twist somehow...

Both sides picked up six yellow cards on the pitch, but Slovenian coach Novakovic Milivoje was also booked in the first game, which Uefa do not count on their disciplinary statistics page, and that ultimately gave Denmark the slimmest of edges.

Yeah but equal amounts of yellows would put Denmark on 2. place anyway because it would come down to how the teams placed in the qualifier. Denmark had to receive more yellows in order to secure...
