What did you do this week?

As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!

I got my partner an apartment in Coronado for the month and spent the first few days of the week up there. I am unsure of how feasible it will be for us to move to San Diego with the rental prices so I opted to give her one month near a good dog beach and in an area that is pretty safe overall. I had to fly back though because I want to continue my flight lessons and get as much done for my PPL as possible. So I had a flight lesson earlier this week practicing at a busy untowered airport which was pretty chaotic. I much prefer flying into and around a towered airport where ATC can give me instructions and route all the traffic safely. At untowered airports, you aren't even required to use your radio so you have to keep your head on a swivel at all times.

Then I did a solo flight yesterday start to finish which was pretty great. I just focused on working on my landings and flying the traffic pattern. I wanted to get my technology set up working right but still had difficulties. I built the Stratux ADS-B receiver with my raspberry pi and it works great! I'm able to pick up traffic on a map from over 50 miles out and my GPS accuracy is ~3m. However, I tried tracking my flight yesterday using the auto-log setting in Garmin Pilot and it did not work at all. Apparently I have to keep the app running on the screen at all times for auto flight logging to work. So, I need to familiarize myself with what I can do on iOS to make this work. I have two flight lessons this weekend and a solo flight in the morning on Sunday so I'm hoping I get this all sorted out.

Outside of the technology side of my flight lessons, I am trying to teach myself how to do a navigation log so I can fly on a longer distance flight. I have to do this a bunch of times manually so that I am familiar with the entire process in case of a technology failure in flight but there is just so much information to calculate out that I don't necessarily have readily available at my fingertips.

Other than all that, I'm enjoying having the apartment all to myself! I love my partner greatly but it sometimes is just nice to have some quiet time and the option to choose a lot of my activities during the day without having to confer with someone else. I left my partner the car so she could drive herself around so I have been going wild riding my motorcycle on all my errands!

I'm not sure how well it would work for flying, but I use OsmAnd on iOS with the trip recording plugin for tracking when I'm going places and it works while in the background, if you enable the "Always allow location" iOS permission thingy (maybe that's the Garmin Pilot issue).

For whatever reason I read something this week that essentially boiled down to "stop planning, start doing". It ends up being that I never was truly planning but using planning as a disguise for procrastinating. In addition to that I was just constantly choosing something that takes less effort over something that takes more effort.

Making the absolute smallest start on anything creates an inertia that keeps it going. I also cleaned out my car this week and got it back to normal again (it had gotten miserable). Now it has room to carry stuff to donation centers :)
