ActivityPub is a way to get lots of computers to talk to each other to form a social network – so for example if I run a club I could start a server which hosts the part of the network for our club, but we can still communicate with everyone else. WordPress is some software for making websites which ~40% of websites use. This is great news for ActivityPub-based services (e.g. Mastodon).
That's great. Still don't think the Fediverse will have a lasting impact without mass adoption and a lot of redesigning to make it more approachable for the standard user, but this is definitely neat.
I think this is a good step in the right direction towards ease-of-use and integration into existing social networks. Automattic also have a pretty good understanding of the web, and don't seem to have the full PE "grab as much as you can as quickly as possible" mindset so I am hopeful.
Tumblr is also owned by the same company who owns Wordpress so I'm hoping they start supporting it as well
