This is a short story by Ben Lerner, written in the style of autofiction, where its difficult to tell fact from fiction:

"I've written a short story—or a kind of fictional essay (it's based on a real project of mine but all the facts have been altered)—about a young man's efforts to manipulate Wikipedia for the good (so he thinks) through the construction of multiple online identities."

The story touches on various techniques of Wikipedia manipulation including using multiple fake online personas (sockpuppetry) and circular reporting or "citogenesis".

Since its publishing, a response in Wikipedia's internal newsletter has been created and a relevant section has been added to Ben Lerner's Wikipedia page.
