After reading the headline, I was terrified of the though of a teen behind the wheel of a self-driving car, an was going to suggest that someone needs atleast 5 years of driving experience before operating a self-driving car.

After reading the article, I see that she's in a FULLY automated vehicle, sitting in the back.

I suppose that pedestrian being killed in Arizona didn't deter the testing of this coming trend.

I also just realized that "automatic" and "manual" might refer to a vehicle's autonomy in the future, not its transmission.

That pedestrian was also hit by one of Uber's self-driving cars, which seem to be extremely far behind Waymo's in terms of safety. From this New York Times article:

Waymo, formerly the self-driving car project of Google, said that in tests on roads in California last year, its cars went an average of nearly 5,600 miles before the driver had to take control from the computer to steer out of trouble. As of March, Uber was struggling to meet its target of 13 miles per “intervention” in Arizona, according to 100 pages of company documents obtained by The New York Times and two people familiar with the company’s operations in the Phoenix area but not permitted to speak publicly about it.

Personally, the advent of computerized and self driving cars frightens me a bit. To me, transportation and communication are the soul of modern civilization. Too much control of these is going to major corporations. It may sounds crazy, but I'm really a bit frightened of a future where corporations and states can track wherever you go, or even drive you somewhere without your permission.
