I've been using Mastodon for a bit, and am really enjoying it. I wonder though, does this article help explain it to someone who didn't know it before, or wasn't convinced into using it before...

Never herd about it before. Seemed to explain it fairly well. I guess my question is where would it fall on continuum from say tildes where it's all about the stuff on the site and what is said;...

I guess my question is where would it fall on continuum from say tildes where it's all about the stuff on the site and what is said; with little to no user aggrandisement, following individuals etc. Or like twitter where it's all about following people regardless of what the topic is.
It's most like twitter, it's a microblogging service so you follow people & see what they say, reply, etc. text + pictures or videos. However, because of the protocol it uses that allows...

However, because of the protocol it uses that allows 'federation' (talking to other servers also running mastodon) you can also talk with other services/sites that use the same underlying protocol, even different from Mastodon: pleroma (which resembles mastodon a bit), peertube (which is videos), and others are being built, like a blogging platform, or a image-sharing (kind of like IG) platform, etc.
