From what I see in the article, it focuses entirely on USA and China - where it is, with Russia, biggest issue (in Russia, kids were arrested for chatting about politics (in private I think) and they are now in prison for like half a year).

You just forgot about rest of the world, where it isn't standard for secret (police? service? I mean cia) gather data about others - the thing with spy hubs in big cities is unbelievable. The problem is, the big companies are here as well. Maybe rest of the world doesn't have cia spying on everyone, but google does.

I agree this is a big issue, but I don't think, it's as catastrophic as they say in the article. Especially if you consider that secret (police?) doesn't spy on people without reason in most countries, the same with ISPs. For example EU has strong laws to stop the spying - both for secret police, ISPs and big companies.

If I may make a suggestion, I think it would be beneficial to touch more on how collected data is already being used maliciously. Such as how Cambridge Analytica used exploited Facebook data to target users based on their political preferences to affect how that user may vote. It may very well have helped Donald Trump win the election and affected the outcome of the Brexit vote. Data that is being collected and mined on social media is already having real world consequences on our elections and political climates, and I feel most users still don't understand the reality of that impact. The data that Facebook released to Cambridge Analytica was used to manipulate the content that users saw to satisfy CA's agenda. If you want to hit home with the western world, I think you should add more than big businesses are targeting us for advertising and profits. There is a good portion of people in the US who will look at your examples of China and tell you "Oh, that will never happen here." Show them it already is.

The thing is that is such a vast topic that it would take an entire book to explain everything for people who are not already aware of recent events.

Oh no doubt. I have been mindful of these things for years and tried spreading a similar message as you have to my family and friends. When I first deleted Facebook (in late 2015/early 2016), I told a lot of people that it was because I didn't agree with their data collection practices and I had several people think I was overreacting. Then when the Cambridge Analytica thing happened, suddenly my dad is asking how to be more private on the web. I learned then that in order for your average person to care, you have to show them how their data is already being exploited and used against them. It sucks, but it is what it is.
