Justice Department probes whether social media is 'stifling' speech

    I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this. Obviously it's bad because it continues to chip away at a free and open Internet and continues Republicans' quest to curtail...

    I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this. Obviously it's bad because it continues to chip away at a free and open Internet and continues Republicans' quest to curtail Constitutional freedoms and give more power to Trump.

    But at the same time, it's interesting to see social media companies threatened to be devoured by the very monster they created. Their tolerance of intolerance has created a political firestorm that is now growing intolerant of them too. And if anything were to give them a wakeup call, this threat to their core principles might be it: allowing a political party to govern for the site which things are and aren't allowed to be posted.

    Unfortunately, even that probably won't wake them up because it would require long term vision, something that corporations are notoriously bad at these days. They'll just continue incrementally changing through the next Congressional hearing, through the next White House meeting, through the next bill until they don't even recognize themselves any more.
