It's an endless march. It always intensifies. They never go the other direction. They won't be satisfied until the whereabouts of all people are known at all times.

Considering that we all carry GPS devices in our pockets practically 24/7, running any number of black boxed programs, we probably reached that point a while ago.

Good point, the facial recognition is just a new augmentation for the existing eye in the sky.

Give it time and people will be begging for their facial scan so that they can be safe

Then it'll be "Well we already have facial scans, what's the harm in [some other more invasive thing]?"

What do you mean you don't want a blood sample taken to get on the train? Are you hiding something?

That's kind of crumby because some people have to travel for work. So they pick between their job and just going with this.

As opposed to those picking between this and traveling to see family, etc? This sucks for everyone lol.

It does seem odd that the U.S. government wants to to follow in the footsteps of the Chinese government. It's almost like this whole trade-war hullabaloo is just a smoke screen for all the things that the U.S. government thinks the Chinese government is doing well and wants to implement domestically.

As an addition, I almost surprised that there isn't more pressure from the U.S. government for businesses to implement more cashless payments like China has. As it seems like going cashless would be a surveillance goldmine.

Why is this being implemented at the gate? Wouldn't it make the most sense to implement this at the security checkpoint, with a scan of your ID card and a scan of your face at the desk with the guard?

If they wanted faces at the exit, too, they could simply integrate it into the existing exit gates I've been seeing pop up in airports recently.

I'm not advocating for this; as a matter of fact I don't like the idea of everyone being forced to surrender their biometrics upon boarding a plane. I'm just trying to understand why they're choosing such a poorly designed system to do it.

Hmm, well two reasons I can think of.

      1. I don't think they actually input any data at the security check, they just match ID to boarding pass. Nothing is entered into a computer, right? So a facial scan could not be matched to any other data point, such as the boarding pass scanner at the gate. They would need to buy boarding pass scanners for security too.

      2. This is probably not a reason, but worth mentioning. If you are not just going for security theater, all security should happen at the gate. That’s the Israeli model and Schipol (Amsterdam) adopted it for international flights.

TSA does actually scan boarding passes at the gate, but does not do any sort of identity verification. Whenever you hand over your pass they use a PENTA scanner to check over it real quick. It even works with mobile passes and confirms the signature of your barcode. They just wave IDs under a UV light to make sure it's legit and also check for a gold star.

security at the gate seems like it could be interesting, but it would be very costly for airports to implement, since many airports have at least 100 gates. A more cost effective, but possible less secure practice could be having security checks run from a main building, then shuttling into a completely separate building with all of the gates. Just my $0.02, though.

OK, thanks for more info. I’m going to have pay more attention next time going through TSA.
