As someone who travels for work, and frequently drives through a few of the places with the worst traffic in the US, I Can. Not. Fucking. Wait. For autonomous cars. The one thing that causes more traffic than any other factor is ego. I see it every day - people don't want to get out of the passing lane but they also don't want to drive at passing speeds. People dangerously dodge and weave between other cars. People don't want to let each other merge. Despite their faults, autonomous vehicles don't have egos.
Just put me on the road in a big self-driving plastic box with a desk inside so I can get some work done browse Tildes in style on a 2 hour commute and I will be the world's happiest man.

I am a certified mechanic (and engineer) and worked in the industry for over a decade, I can tell you right now self driving cars that do not have the capability for the driver to take over in some capacity will not happen in our lifetime (if at all).
There are to many variables and franky the technology is not there yet. Self driving autopilot as a form of cruise control (similar to what Tesla currently offers) is the current future, and even that is still not 100% ready yet.
Personally, I do not think any vehicle should be 100% computer controlled. There will always be circumstances when manual navigation is needed and having the option to do so should always be a possibility. Shoot, even Star Trek and Star Wars have the option for manual control.
