I have no idea what RED was really going for here. Did they think their "holographic" 3DS-style format would justify their investment in both a new phone and a new app/social network ecosystem? Not to mention the fact that the price tag ensures a small (at best) user base, which imo cripples RED's chances of getting any significant number of devs to create content for them. And, of course, they decided to bank on their rep as a camera company while releasing a phone with a pedestrian camera and the promise of a future true RED camera add-on (another likely expensive purchase) which so far is just vaporware.

Then again, if a company as big as Amazon can make a similar misstep (Fire phone), I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

This was awkward to watch. MKBHD—clearly a fan of RED—has been for lack of a better word, hyping, this phone for the past year. His original review where he didn't show the screen, but had looked at it, was far more positive than what he's presented here. Upon release though, it's been fairly universally panned.

I do appreciate he has kind of owned up here and provided this a negative review; but given his biased opinions and small mistakes in many of his videos, I'm not really sure I trust Marques' opinions these days.

As it's often said on /r/android, MKBHD recently became a bit too much "fluff", with some emphasis at personality. And I'm not sure I wouldn't go this way if I was Marquez: the fame is deserved but it spoils, no one can be at their peak indefinitely.

I'm waiting for JerryRigEverything to get his hands (and razor blade of truth) on this phone.

I don't get this hype around 3D, it's simply not the real thing, not even a likeness of it, and totally boring. I haven't watched a 3D movie, but did play a couple 3D games on PS4 with a friend a few years ago. It's basically a boring illusion. Basing a whole product on it is a lack of vision at best.
