However, this was submitted to Hacker News with this query string attached to it: ?pu=hackernews11vvpt&utm_source=hackernews&utm_medium=unlock. If you remove the pu= one, you hit the paywall (I edited it back in after @Luna originally submitted without it).
The user that submitted to HN is ballmers_peak and their profile says "Director of Growth @ The Information". So this is someone that's specifically submitting to HN with paywall bypasses to try to attract new subscribers.
I would hazard to guess many CMS solutions for content outlets have some kind of preflight/bypass paywall feature, which is fascinating to think about in terms of implementation behind the scenes.
