I’ve seen a lot of stories about this on Reddit, and I definitely don’t agree with the increased sanctions. That being said, Microsoft has to follow the law. I’m not sure why there’s so much anger directed at Microsoft/Github when the actual cause of this is US government sanctions. I am in general not comfortable with advocating companies break the law (unless the law is plainly immoral, which I don’t think these sanctions are) as I in general don’t trust company’s sense of justice.

I also think comparisons to Nazi germany’s treatment of Jews and Jewish business owners in this case particularly distasteful. As much as I disagree with the policy, economic sanctions against geopolitical opponents are hardly new and hardly unique to the US.

The current tension with Iran is a farce created by this administration, but GitHub should not be the focus of the frustration with these sanctions.
