Smart homes are such a cool idea and have so much potential. But there's almost no reason they need to be contacting anything outside my home. There should be some sort of server I can run on my home computer that I can update remotely if needed, and all my devices should talk only to my home server. It would end BS like this.
Also, these devices really need some basic security. I hope the new alliance announced between Apple, Amazon, Google, and Zigbee works out.
I set it up today, it was super easy. I just had to flash the sd card, put it in a raspberry pi, and wait a little bit. The pi hole addon did. cause some headache though.

Didn't Google pull the same stunt with Nest? I recall there being a lot of older Nest devices which were effectively bricked by the parent company. I'm also surprised that none of this has led to...
