Just want to point out that this article talks about the number of groups that were actioned by Facebook, but does not document how large they were.

Facebook on Wednesday banned about 900 pages and groups and 1,500 ads tied to the pro-Trump conspiracy theory QAnon, part of a sweeping action that also restricted the reach of over 10,000 Instagram pages and almost 2,000 Facebook groups pushing the baseless conspiracy theory that has spawned real-world violence.

However, a recent Guardian report showed that of the 170 or so QAnon Facebook groups that it was tracking, their membership was over 4 million people.

As of Sunday 9 August, the aggregate following of those previously documented groups, pages and accounts had grown by 34% to over 4m. The largest groups have grown to include more than 200,000 members.

The Guardian also documented an additional 73 groups and pages dedicated to QAnon with at least 1,000 followers or members each. Many of those 73 groups are brand new – founded in May 2020 or later – and they have already amassed an aggregate following of more than 560,000 people.

While its been simmering for years on more fringe elements of the internet, Qanon is quickly emerging as a leading political force in the United States and is even getting its adherents elected to Congress.

It is insane how much damage to Democracy has been done by Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, and all of the other sites that allowed these communities to fester for far too long.

As an incredibly disappointing update to this, it appears that this mass effort by FB to deplatform Qanon prompted a reporter to ask Trump about the movement last night for the first time and he gave what is probably one of the worst answers possible to it saying "I understand they like me very much, which I appreciate... I've heard these are people who love our country," among other words of praise.

At this point I can't even really commend Facebook for this decision. They've let the genie out of the bottle and are now doing too little too late. My only hope is that, at some point, they will...

At this point I can't even really commend Facebook for this decision. They've let the genie out of the bottle and are now doing too little too late. My only hope is that, at some point, they will be held accountable for what they've allowed to happen on their platform in pursuit of profit.
