Looking to chat? I've created an (unofficial) Tildes community Matrix room!
So there are many, many Matrix clients but the most popular one seems to be Riot which is available on iOS, Android (F-Droid, Play Store), and as a web app which you can join by clicking the link above.
It's similar to Discord in the features it offers, but being open source I thought it might be more in the spirit of Tildes than some of the proprietary alternatives.
That being said I'll be the first to admit Riot is a bit rough around the edges and Matrix seems to be under both heavy load and development. If there's demand for it I should be able to get a dedicated server up since it's an optionally federated service.
Oh, and as a bonus the Matrix chat links with the Tildes IRC channels (#tildes and ##tildes) on freenode, so there's that. (Thanks @tyil)
Don't forget to visit @Kat's wonderful ~tech wiki for links to other options such as Discord and Telegram if them's more your fancy.
Happy wordsing!
And it's already on the wiki! Awesome.
Though I prefer something different than Matrix, it is under heavy development.
Matrix is currently being backed by France for their own secure messaging tool. That is a huge vote of confidence, and means that Matrix should get some changes pushed back to them around end-user experience and making it better.
The France thing is interesting, I hadn't heard that. I did read however that they had some pretty significant backing from one or more companies but I don't recall which (and apparently can't be bothered to look it up.)
Corporate and top Patreon sponsors are here.
I'm afraid I don't know most of the corporate sponsors:
Keybase. Simple, uses my GPG keys. Also has git and a filesystem attached.
Less secure than Matrix, but more useable, and I've managed to onboard my parents who can barely use an iPad, which speaks to me about how easy to use it is.
There'll be features missing for some power users... But not for me.
Awww...
But I know what you mean. I only really have people I've onboarded connected to me.
Oh wow, that's definitely pretty.
Frankly I'm digging Telegram. Maybe I shouldn't say that.
I'm personally not a fan of Telegram as I don't have a phone number (and thus I cannot use it) and of course the security issues it has, despite being catered towards privacy focused users.
More alternatives is always good though :)
You can register with email. :)Really? This is the first that I've heard of it. Where is the place to register using an email? (do you have more detailed instructions)?
https://web.telegram.org/#/login seems to only have a phone number box as does the android app.
You know what? I think you're right. I was trying out Wire last night which offered both options and think I got some wires crossed up in the old attic here. Sorry about that.
It looks like your play store link for Riot is to the wrong thing, the correct link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=im.vector.alpha
Whoops! Thanks for that, fixed.
Is their server open-source?
I know the clients are, but I'm not really comfortable going to another walled garden. If they do something I don't like, no one can host their own server like they could with IRC or Matrix.
Well. I was looking for an excuse to check matrix out. This is as good a one as any other.
