Posting old news
I've tried using search (both by keyword and by tag) but I couldn't find anything about this. What's Tildes opinion about posting old news that haven't been discussed yet? I'm not talking about your regular news post from a newspaper that is already too late to be discussed about, I'm talking about things such as software releases or old blog posts that have never been posted but would be interesting to discuss about. How would one tag them? Where should we post them if allowed?
Edit: I'm sorry but I won't be here for discussing this tomorrow or during the weekend. I'm not staying at home, but I hope I can come back to some good responses next week.
Personally, I'm totally fine as long as it's on topic here. I think tagging such a post with the year should suffice. Over on HN they do this sort of thing often, and add the year to the title in bracket, but given we have proper tags, we don't need to do such thing.
Tildes is also already able to pick up date info from a fair number of sites automatically. It's not being used for much yet (I hope to do more with it eventually), but it will show up on listing pages after the title/domain if it detects that the linked page is more than 3 days old.
Here's an example, using a very specific search just to get that individual post to show up.
There's nothing wrong with what you're suggesting and as cadadr pointed out, commentators at HN (as well as other communities) often submit links to past news or articles with the purpose of discussing what's been brought to the table. I think the operative phrase here is to encourage discussion and I find that generally speaking, if the submitter writes a thought or even something of a 'submission statement' in conjunction with the link they've just submitted for consideration, it increases the likelihood that readers will respond as the op just got the ball rolling for everyone.
I know that's a bit of a side note, but I definitely encourage anyone who submits a link (to an article or news piece, old or new - doesn't matter) to follow up with some thoughts on that link - even if it's just posting about what motivated you to share it. My dream for Tildes is that this is a place people can come to that's much less of a feed and much more of a place for actual conversation.
As another side note to your post, I was always a bit ambivalent when I saw people on reddit address it as a singular entity. I feel that a community is expected to have differences of opinion and when people incorrectly treat a community as an individual, it starts to offer a rather hypocritical impression of behavior to both participants and passerby's. Feel free to let me know if I'm nitpicking here (it's just an observation).
IMO those are fine. Old blog posts can often be still as relevant 5 years later as the day they came out. Or they can be an interesting retrospective on how things where back then.
On most websites its typical to put the year of publication in the title in brackets .
Thanks everyone for their answers and @Deimos for the example, I couldn't remember Tildes did that with old posts.
@Miroona I understand what you mean by referring to Tildes as a single entity. The reason I wrote it that way was pure laziness and being in a hurry, my bad.
