High-priority things to fix/add

Here's a quick list of things that I'm working on getting ready in the very near future. Please let me know if you have particular thoughts on any of these.

  1. Fixing the site icons for link topics (currently just shows the blue dashed square).
  2. Putting some information in topic sidebars - any thoughts on what would be good to have here? I think I'd like to have some of the more-detailed metadata about the topic once there's more of that being generated (for example for videos, this could show which channel it's from, how long it is, etc.), but that still won't be very much and there's a lot of space. Commenting rules? Something else?
  3. Inbox/notifications for replies to your comments and topics, as well as username mentions. Any opinions about how it would be good to do this in a way that's convenient and not too annoying?
  4. Collapse buttons for comment threads (possibly by being able to click the line as well, similar to the reddit redesign)

    Reddit's reply/notification/post-management system is pretty decent in that regard: change colour of something (username or icon next to it) when someone replies to your comments or @username...

    • change colour of something (username or icon next to it) when someone replies to your comments or @username mentions you
    • "send replies to my inbox" option on your own posts/submissions using the same notification system as replies... though you could use a different colour to let people know it isn't a direct reply they just received

    And I know this wasn't really what you were asking for but some additional features I have been thinking of that would be really nice are:

    • ability to "subscribe/follow" another submission/post or comment thread not of your own creation, a bit like an RSS feed, so you can be notified when a new comment is made in them. You can use similar mechanics to the comment reply notification.. but again, maybe use a different colour to indicate it's not a direct reply
    • the ability to create keyword notifications that act in a similar manner so if we really want to be notified when a new post about X subject is submitted then we can get notified. E.g. "Mueller" ;)

    p.s. I think for topic sidebars just go with the basics (important meta-data) for now... as communities form and develop you can start thinking about and soliciting for ideas about "rules" people would like to see included there.

    p.p.s. if you can give us a setting to open links using target="_blank" by default I would appreciate it. I know I can just hold down control and left-click to get that but relying on a setting and simply left-clicking is habit at this point for me. :)
