I suspect some people put off registering until a later time/date but then forgot to, or they simply fail to notice the invite code PM in the first place due to it being way too easy to accidentally mark messages as 'read' on reddit.

I have periodically had to request Deimos clear out all the unused invites from my account, since they eventually start to pile up, and now that you're on the /r/tildes mod team (and are quicker than me at sending out invites) you will undoubtedly have to do the same at some point down the line too.

My guess is people get multiple invites, and don't bother replying to the ones they don't use.

Yeah, that is definitely also one of the reasons they don't get used. I have received a few replies over the years by people letting me know they already got one, so don't need the one I sent them. And in response I usually just tell them to keep the extra and give it to a friend, but I'm pretty sure none of them ever did.
