The intricacies of railway operations have always fascinated me. Freight rail gets a bad rap in the United States, but the efficient transportation of bulk materials along railway tracks is essential to modern life.

This video is an approachable discussion of freight railway "marshalling yards" (also known as "classification yards" and "shunting yards") and how trains containing hundreds of traincars are cleverly disassembled, reassembled, and sent on their way. The video talks about the different kinds of yards as well as some of the logistical challenges present in organizing large amount of freight heading to and from disparate locations using a finite number of tracks. It also mentions some of the largest yards in the world.

I loved getting some perspective on this critical part of our infrastructure, even at a high level. I figured the algorithmic nature of classification yard traincar sorting would be interesting to this audience in particular. I hope you enjoy the video as well.
