Chicago's newest rail extension project will extend the Red Line from 95th St to 130th St (5.6 miles) in an effort to better connect one of the city's more economically depressed areas (see map). This infrastructure project will meaningfully reduce travel times across the city and will be especially useful to low-income and disabled persons who cannot drive automobiles.

Engineering will begin in 2024 with construction following in 2025. Project completion is expected in 2029.

The Red Line Extension will include four new stations at 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street, plus a new rail yard and other rail facilities that the CTA said will also improve the rest of Red service.

The project's website states, "RLE will provide up to 30-minute time savings to riders traveling from the future 130th Street station to the Loop."

Public transportation is important for our society. It improves regional connectivity and reduces car dependency, which has the added bonus of freeing up people's personal budgets. In the south side that could mean the difference between going into harrowing debt to 'afford' a car and being able to access job opportunities by train that would otherwise be inaccessible.
