The Atlanta Beltline is an initiative to create a walking/cycling path surrounding the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia. The idea is to give people access to free recreation and exercise, to connect neighborhoods and amenities, and to reduce car dependence.

The project is nearing completion. This latest grant funds a new park for bikes in Westside.

Planned features of the new park include 2.25 miles of mountain bike trails; challenging routes for advanced riders with rocks, steep drop-offs, tight switchbacks, and technical rock gardens; a low-risk bicycle playground tailored for young riders; and hiking trails.

Design concepts are currently underway for the park. The first phase of construction is expected to begin at the end of 2025. The scope of the first phase of construction will be funding dependent.

You can see an interactive map of the Atlanta Beltline here. Green sections are already constructed, gray sections are under construction, and red sections are in design. The route goes through a variety of neighborhoods, but most of it is in wealthier areas.

This kind of project is really good and really important, but we need to start thinking about having networks of trails rather than focusing only on a few projects. It's also important to extend these networks into lower-income areas in order to reduce car-dependency, which is a proportionally bigger economic problem for low-income people than their wealthier counterparts.
