I spent a few days in Ely, Nevada around 15 years ago and had the immense and unexpected pleasure of discovering the Nevada Northern Train Museum. I didn’t actually get to ride on any trains, but I got to talk with the engineers working in the repair house and got to see the parts and tools they used. I also got to see many different engines in different states of repair, and even got to see less common engines (or engine attachments?) like snowplows that would clear the way through snow as tall as the train itself. Absolutely fascinating museum if you have any interest in trains at all. I didn’t even know I liked trains before I went there.

Ely is really, really far out of the way for most travelers, but if you do head there, the train museum is worth staying an extra day or two. And while you’re there, you can also stay at the Hotel Nevada, formerly the tallest building in Nevada (all 6 stories of it).
