Okay so I’ve been doing a bit of catch-up on prestige TV as we look forward to the Emmy’s.
Here are the shows I’ve seen at least a little of, first the non-Emmy shows:
Nathan For You
As I said last week I was an extra on a show starring Emma Stone. Fielder was the director, but I never actually watched any of his stuff, except for this video.
I thought this show was really funny. It was light entertainment... and then we get to the last episode where it becomes this comedy-philosophy type thing that I don’t really care for. Speaking of which...
The Rehearsal
Basically an extension of Nathan For You’s finally. I liked it. But, again, I don’t really care about this comedy-philosophy, meta, reflection on how life is meaningless. I know twitter loves that, I know that’s why Bojack Horseman is so popular. And I used to be really into that when I was in high school. I would watch Bojack and Wilfred (both of which are responsible for the existential angst I had at 15).
I’m kind of over it now though. A lot of the times I’d be like “I get it let’s move on.” Though there were still really funny scenes involving that one evangelical Christian that hated jews and Halloween.
What We Do In The Shadows Season 4
I’ve been putting off watching this for a while. I just wasn’t up to it. But after the first episode (which I thought was a bit of a slog) it really got going. It was still really funny, even if they didn’t jump off the last season like I hoped they would. Glad the third season was nominated for Comedy series again!
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4
A couple of months ago I started it and didn’t finish it. So I finally finished it. I still think the show was only really good for the first two seasons. I’d say where I dropped off the show was a bit of a meandering mess, but the last three episodes the plot starts to kick off. So it becomes a better watch because things are actually happening. I cannot imagine them trying to do this for several more seasons so I expect Season 5 to be the last.
Only Murders in the Building Season 2
Just finished this up today and it was... kind of disappointing. That first season is so good. So brilliantly written, that the second season probably could never live up to it. The mystery and the characters aren’t as engrossing as they were last season. And while it felt like we were picking up on clues little by little in the last season, it feels like we’re largely left in the dark until a character says “I think x did it.” And we got so much development of the eventual killer in the first season, including the close relationship she made to the gang, and here we don’t get development at all until the last episode. Also Cara Delevigne cannot act.
Still has its moments though, and the cliffhanger seems to be promising for Season 3.
Now let’s get into the uncompleted ones:
Dopesick
I saw the first episode and I couldn’t do it. It feels dated, like something that might have been edgy in the 90s but is now kind of dull. I might eventually watch the rest of the show, but I don’t know.
The Dropout
I actually didn’t mind this. I wasn’t interested enough in watching the rest of the show, but I can see why people like it. Seyfreid really is giving a great performance.
The Staircase
Feels too much like dreary generic true-crime. Over it. Toni Collette is very pretty though.
