Saw the new Velma. It's hardly a Scooby-Doo show. To the point that I find myself evaluating it not as a part of the franchise, but rather as a brand new show with a Scooby-Doo skin. As such, it's okay, with a few decent jokes and an interesting protagonist. But I have no reason to keep watching it other than a desire to participate in the zeitgeist and the fact that I love Mindy Kaling's voice.[1]
I wanted to understand if that overwhelmingly negative reaction was truly a reaction to the show's quality, and the answer is no. Despite being unworthy of mention, I believe that the hate against the show is immensely intensified by a rejection of the race flips and LGBT aspect. The natural reaction to a show like this would be indifference and a low score (but not that low). Which is not news for the franchise.
[1] That said, this is probably the best Scooby-Doo show ever made. Without nostalgia lenses, traditional Scooby-Doo is really not that good from a modern point of view. I just happen to be comparing Velma with contemporary animations that are either adult or at least not strictly for kids.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that it looks like this Velma is bisexual and her teenage "will they won't they" with Daphne is super endearing. Given that the Scooby-Doo franchise is largely for kids, the reaction from non-progressive adults was to be expected. Romance is the best part of the show, and that should surprise no one given that Mindy Kaling is a romcom nerd.
I saw the first episode of The Last of Us.
I’ve already played the game and so far there wasn’t something that made me go “oh yeah I gotta watch this unfold… again.” It largely felt like the game’s plot with some filler thrown in to fill in the gaps.
Everything about it is high quality though. I can see the money on the screen.
