I hadn't ever read it before now though, and only encountered it because of its inclusion in the What to Read If You Miss Watching Saturday Morning Cartoons Pocket Collection, which has a whole bunch of other interesting articles too, by the look of it.
But speaking of this Batman article, one of the most interesting parts of it for me was learning that Tim Curry had originally been hired to play the Joker. And as a result, I went hunting to see if there was any footage of his performance... and it turns out, there is! I adore Tim Curry, but TBH I'm glad they went with Mark Hamill instead. Hamill's performance was so much more maniacal, and his voice is the gold standard for Joker for me... Similar to how Kevin Conroy (RIP) is the gold standard for Batman, and Arleen Sorken (RIP) is the gold standard for Harley Quinn.

As a massive fan of both actors, and of BTAS, it's a scenario that's haunted me for years. If I had a single-use time machine, would I use it to influence events so that Tim Curry would get the role, just so I could experience what could have been? Or would I just be content with how amazing Mark Hamill was in the role and, I don't know, prevent global warming or something?
I finally have some kind of closure.
Honestly, I'd still be curious to hear how Curry's performance would have evolved over time. But these snippets aren't nearly as game-changing as I anticipated. I guess now I have to spend more time figuring out how to solve global warming with a single time jump.
I know Curry is capable of doing amazing voice work, and has played plenty of incredible villain characters over the years (E.g. Legend, Brütal Legend), but from the little that was shown in the...
I know Curry is capable of doing amazing voice work, and has played plenty of incredible villain characters over the years (E.g. Legend, Brütal Legend), but from the little that was shown in the clips of him doing Joker, I honestly wasn't that impressed. Ironically enough, it felt a bit too cartooney, and I didn't feel any of the menace that the other people in the clip talked about. But yeah, were an alternate timeline possible, I'd definitely still be interested in seeing how Curry would have developed the voice and character further had he had the opportunity.
