Has anyone else watched Netflix's Dark Tourist? What are your thoughts?
I found this show thoroughly interesting, if confronting at times. I haven't seen much discussion on the internet, so I'm wondering what Tildes thinks?
Watched the series over the weekend and was thoroughly engrossed by it. It was an even mix of curios that I might psych myself up to go and do on my own and things almost too offensive to even watch.
I think of all the places he went, Myanmar tempted me the most. Having a city like that almost entirely to yourself would be both cool and incredibly eeries.
Interesting, good mindless viewing. I like that the host isn't afraid to confront his guides, he even pushes it pretty far with the sicario. Morally it brings up some questions. The guy is profiting off of misery and evil the same way many of his guides are when he takes them to task for it.
David definitely walks in the grey at times, but I think I can easily draw the distinction between a guy profiting from his morbid fascination and another guy profiting from murderer apologia.
I've only seen about half of it but I feel like there are some darker places he should be going. WWII reenactments and multiple nuclear hot sites just seems kind of meh. There's tons of more creepy taboo stuff in the world.
Hoping for a season two.
I think the Fukushima disaster and Soviet testing sites were legitimate choices. I think it's interesting to see how tourists, locals, and the government are dealing with the situation and the various ways that they are succeeding and failing to manage that disaster. In both the Japan and the Stans episodes, I thought it was interesting to see the transition from glowing allure of a nuclear wasteland to sincere terror/grief about the consequences of nuclear disasters.
I agree with the WWII reenactment stuff. I wish he pressed the two Danes (Dutch?) about walking around in SS uniforms. I fundamentally can't understand why anyone would want to wear that in almost any context outside of education -- and walking around, getting drunk, wearing a death's head pin on your hat and SS bolts on your collar should not earn anyone any amount of praise no matter how historically accurate the costume.
I agree, I really enjoyed the nuclear sites. My friend and I were shouting at the TV for him to get out of there towards the end of Fukushima. It was genuinely very stressful.
Idk the Nazi uniform thing doesn't bother me per say. I think if you're wearing one to support their ideals then obviously you're a terrible person, but I'd like to think the public shaming you'd receive in Nazi attire might be the best medicine for such beliefs. Additionally if you're wearing one in jest, I think it's a funny costume. It shows that Nazism is so ludicrous that it can even be seen as costume attire, and this is coming from someone with mostly Polish blood shrug.
