It's pretty weird because Disney isn't really committing to Hulu overall, they're working on their own called "Disney+" that's supposed to release this year.
Not all that weird when you take into the fact that Hulu pushes their "add on" channels more and more everyday. Disney+ will likely be a channel you can access from within Hulu for $X amount extra...

If they have some shows free, and then an entire channel devoted (for paid) to that sort of content than they will be able to better advertise and profit for the service.
Thats not taking into account how that allows to reach universal streaming integration through Hulu's app ecosystem without having to devote the resources to entire dev teams for stability on every platform.
