One of the CEO’s most repeated notes is “don’t be so mean!,” the source said.

That's really bad, and shows a degree of ignorance I don't expect from a successful businessman. What would it be of Itunes if Tim Took vetted x-rated lyrics? He should let the film and TV professionals deal with the market they understand... just look at some of the greatest recent successes on TV: Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. They're mean as fuck!

It's like they wanna be a Disney Channel while retaining all the adult viewership... well, you gotta choose one or the other!

Yeah, it really gives me the impression that the project is disorganized and the people working on it may not necessarily understand what the Apple execs are expecting from them. For example, they ordered a series from two of the main people behind It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but if they don't want mature content then... did any of them actually watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?

There was a Wall Street Journal story last September with more stories like this too, like:

Apple signed a deal for a series made by M. Night Shyamalan about a couple who lose a young child. Before saying yes to that psychological thriller, Apple executives had a request: Please eliminate the crucifixes in the couple’s house, said people working on the project. They said executives made clear they didn’t want shows that venture into religious subjects or politics.

I can't imagine what kind of shows this is going to produce if they're fretting about details that tiny.

At some point Rob McElhenney was going to direct the Minecraft Movie, though. I don't think the issue is necessarily people they partner with, but the management of expectations. Just remember that Babe was made by the same guy who created the Mad Max franchise, and Bryan Cranston was a harmless dad in Malcom in the Middle way before Breaking Bad.

This sounds very 90's Nintendo levels of dancing around sensitive subjects

Interesting. I was a kid in the 90s so I don’t know anything about this. In what ways was Nintendo similar?

A lot of it focused on localization, as well. I can give a number of examples from one of the games I know best from that period, Chrono Trigger. There's several drinking contests in the game. In the US, one of them is "soda" and the other is "soup". With the "soup" contest, characters woke up after with headaches and fuzzy memories of the previous night. What kind of soup does that? Beyond this, there's a minor character who spends all their time at a "café". In the Japanese original, these were more adult beverages like sake.

There's also the rather curious case of Birdo from SMB2 / Doki Doki Panic.

There's actually a lot to this, and it's quite an interesting topic if you want to dig into it.

I remember the Mortal Kombat blood thing very well, as I was a fan of the series. Besides better graphics, the Mega Drive (Genesis in the US) had a clear advantage in that regard. But there was a cheat code on the SNES unlock the blood, and we all used it.

I played Chrono Trigger, but I don't remember the soup. I probably just "translated" to booze in my head.
