Just finishing up the second season of The Umbrella Academy. It's been pretty good. I knew nothing about the series when it came out last year and have been pleasantly surprised by it.
We're heading into a bit of a slow period for new series. With Condor, Perry Mason, and Doom Patrol wrapping up, I'm eager to find something to tuck into.
I'm going to start watching Suburra, which was suggested to me by a dude who was also into Zero Zero Zero and Gomorrah. If we get more mob stuff, I'll be pretty happy.
After years of avoiding The Shield, I finally dug in. I'm only starting the third season, and I'm not sure where I sit with it. The pacing is off and they're leaning hard on 'everything is going to shit and is super stressful.' Vic's one-note wife and family life is unnecessary for the most part. I can see why this show has such a following, but I'd rather watch The Wire (duh) or Southland.
There is little that kills a show more than a mismanaged family. It's like with Homeland before they completely dropped the Brody bunch (a term I wish I had thought of back then...) -- keep the story focused and don't wander off to give the daughter her own arc.
Star Trek: Lower Decks came out. I'll give it a few weeks, but I think I'll end up neutral on it. It's got some funny parts, though. Mike McMahan is a pretty good writer, so I'm hoping it all comes together into something fresh. But... I haven't been very impressed with the other new Trek series.
I'll Be Gone in the Dark is a book that was written by Michelle McNamara, Patton Oswalt's wife who passed in 2016. She had been investigating the Golden State Killer with a few others from a forum... and this series documents everything. I caught the first episode and it seemed interesting enough if you're into true crime stuff with a personal angle.
Another HBO docuseries I'm looking forward to is covering NXIVM, The Vow. This is out on the 23rd.
I'm looking forward to Third Day. Jude Law is perfect for television and I really hope he sticks with it. It looks a lot like The Wicker Man, but with more sci-fi to it. After his work with The Young Pope and The New Pope, I've become an even bigger Jude Law fan.
Started watching The Handmaids Tale earlier this week, and have been enjoying it quite a lot but, unfortunately my Internet has gone down and will probably be down for quite some time so I doubt I'll be able to watch any more for a few weeks and I'll probably lose interest in watching it after that which is a shame but so far I've been really enjoying it.
It's weird to me that the plot seems to progress more as a book turned into a TV show than other shows of the like m, such as game of thrones do. The dialogue often feels forced and out of place but I genuinely can't tell if that's the writing or the setting. I love the imagery and the colours though. All in all I woukd reccomend it for anyone who likes dystopian setting TV and film, as it seems very well made to me.
